Sulfa-v
Sulfa-V is a combination of non-potentiated and potentiated sulfa drugs known to
be effective in against the most commonly encountered bacterial pathogen of
seahorses, Vibrio sp. Twelve species of Vibrio have been identified as
pathogenic in seahorses to date, of which the most commonly encountered is
V.alginolyticus.
Vibrio is a non-motile, gram negative bacterium. The inclusion of the
potentiated sulfonamide means the (usually bacteriostatic) sulfas in Sulfa V
work bactericidally, inhibiting protein synthesis.
Sulfa-V is also effective against other gram negative bacteria and can be used
to treat general symptoms of bacterial infection in seahorses.
Neo3 is the prefered antibiotic for treatment of vibrio. Sulfa-v should only
be used when neo3 has failed to cure the disease.
